reflections pt.iii

I’m really grateful that Serena was able to bring me into this space. I remember hearing her talk about it and being super intrigued by not only the topic, but the community that was being created around it. And the community I think is something really lovely about our little directed reading. However, I definitely think I’ve learned a lot more about things along the lines of interpersonal skills and management compared to actual theory—which I think is something that our class intended to teach anyways. The process of creating this class taught me so much more than doing readings and such, and I think if anything that’s what I’ll take away. I want to share the things I’ve learned about encouraging accountability, creating safe spaces, and redefining what a “class” should look like with the rest of Swarthmore and my friends.

After taking this class, I think my vision of APIA futures is first and foremost one of optimism and hope. I envision our communities safe and happy—that is my top priority. I also envision a future where our communities lie in solidarity with other communities of color. Our identities need not be fences holding us in line, but building blocks from which to connect with others.
